Description: Extension Offers “Using Art In The Garden” Program-Troy, NY- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will offer the program “Using Art In The Garden” on Thursday, February 23, at 7 PM. Beautiful gardens can include gorgeous flowers and greens plus interesting objects, such as colorful furniture, sculpture and statuary. Master Gardener Denise Maurer will explain how to pair flowers and vegetables with décor, choose focal points, and evaluate what to use where. Description: HOSTA - Tractor Safety Certification -There are many employment opportunities found in businesses within the agricultural/horticultural industry through out the capital district. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will be providing HOSTA (Hazardous Occupations Safety Training in Agriculture) to interested residents in Albany, Schenectady and Rensselaer Counties who are 14 years of age by April 1st or older. This will be an intensive 3 week course starting on Saturday, March 3rd and concluding tentatively on Sunday, March 18th. During this time frame, classes will be held on Weekends and Wednesday nights. The focus of the curriculum will be safe operation and maintenance of large equipment, personal protection, chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards as well as livestock handling. Employers and parents should be aware that youth aged 14 and 15 years who are not working directly for their parents must have a tractor operator certificate to legally operate large equipment according to OSHA. HOSTA will prepare participants and qualify them to earn a tractor operators certificate if students attend all classes, pass a written and operators exam. The classes will be held at various Agribusinesses in Rensselaer County. You must call the CCE office to pre-register at 272-4210. Cost of the program will be $25 payable the first day of class. There must be a minimum of 5 registered to hold the class. This course is also recruiting part-time farmers/gardeners or anyone who owns any kind of tractor or equipment. They may participate on March 3rds machinery orientation and safety overview for a cost of $10.

Description: The Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino has announced the 2012 schedule of the County's Rabies Vaccination Clinics. The clinics aim to prevent human exposure to the potentially deadly disease by immunizing domestic animals and pets that could potentially carry the disease. During the upcoming clinics, Rensselaer County Department of Health staff will provide the appropriate rabies vaccination and booster shots to cats, ferrets and dogs as mandated by the New York State Department of Health. Owners are asked to present their pets’ most recent immunization certificate, and all pets must be secured either in a carrier or on a leash. The first hour of each clinic is dedicated to cats and ferrets with the second hour dedicated to dogs. Description: RCHS announces Spring Bus Trip to New York City. TROY, N.Y. – Join the Rensselaer County Historical Society (RCHS) on a bus trip to New York City on Friday, April 27, 2012. Tickets are $85 per person, $75 for members. Participants will depart from the Yankee Trails Bus Depot, in Rensselaer New York at 6:30 am. The first stop will be at The Metropolitan Museum of Art for a self-guided tour of the museum and in particular the exhibit - Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York. Lunch will be on your own. They will depart from The Metropolitan at 12:30 and travel to the Morris-Jumel Mansion to tour the oldest house in Manhattan and once George Washington’s headquarters. From there they will travel to the Hamilton Grange National Memorial, which recently underwent major renovations including moving the house two blocks. The renovation was overseen by the Albany based firm of John G. Waite Assoc. Preservation Architects. The bus will depart Manhattan at 4:30pm for an evening return to YankeeTrails depot.

Description: Hidden History - Mt. Ida Cemetery & the Poestenkill Gorge- Join Kathryn Sheehan, Rensselaer County Historian, as they tour Mt. Ida Cemetery, which features some of the oldest headstones in the city of Troy. They will then tour the Poestenkill Gorge a favorite destination for picnickers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts for decades. The waters of the Poestenkill collect in Dyken Pond, then make a dash for the Hudson River below. The Mt. Ida falls drop roughly 85' into a gorge of crumbly black shale, make a right angle turn, dropping a further 75' into a massive pool. This source of water power fueled several industries along the Poestenkill's banks in the 19th century. $12 Members / $15 non-members.

Description: TROY NY – Enjoy an evening of art and culture in Downtown Troy NY on the last Friday of every month, officially known as Troy Night Out. The streets are busier than usual for this event as the evening draws over 1,000 locals and visitors alike to get a true taste of the arts and take advantage of everything Troy, New York has to offer! Troy Night Out runs from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm every month on the last Friday. Between these hours, guests can enjoy over 30 art events, 15 music venues, and 20+ fine restaurants in addition to superb shopping at unique boutiques of all varieties. But the fun doesn't stop at 9:00 pm! Many downtown eateries and bars offer a place for people to gather and continue to enjoy the night. There are a variety of venues who participate in Troy Night Out each month.

Rabbies Clinic
Description: The Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino has announced the 2012 schedule of the County's Rabies Vaccination Clinics. The clinics aim to prevent human exposure to the potentially deadly disease by immunizing domestic animals and pets that could potentially carry the disease. During the upcoming clinics, Rensselaer County Department of Health staff will provide the appropriate rabies vaccination and booster shots to cats, ferrets and dogs as mandated by the New York State Department of Health. Owners are asked to present their pets’ most recent immunization certificate, and all pets must be secured either in a carrier or on a leash. The first hour of each clinic is dedicated to cats and ferrets with the second hour dedicated to dogs.
